Building a specialist e-commerce retailer
Sector: specialist e-commerce · Period: January 2011 to October 2013 · Led by Julian Britain
A specialist e-commerce retailer was built from scratch into a profitable business with a large catalogue, an exclusive supplier relationship and a heritage brand trade account few competitors could match.
The business started with no established catalogue, no supplier relationships of scale and no trading history, in a niche e-commerce category where credibility with manufacturers and brands mattered as much as the website itself.
Building a large enough catalogue to compete, while staying profitable, meant being selective about which supplier relationships to pursue rather than growing the range for its own sake.
We built the catalogue methodically, prioritising suppliers and product ranges that would strengthen the business’s position rather than simply adding volume.
We secured exclusive UK distribution for a German manufacturer, giving the business access to product no UK competitor could offer, and used that credibility to open further supplier conversations.
That track record supported an approach to a heritage brand that did not normally work with e-commerce-only retailers, resulting in a trade account few, if any, competitors held.

First
E-commerce-only retailer to hold the heritage brand’s trade account
- Grow a catalogue around supplier relationships that build credibility, not just volume.
- Use an early exclusive arrangement as leverage to open further supplier conversations.
- Let a proven track record make the case when approaching a partner who does not usually work with businesses like yours.
